At the end of the four day course Independent course assessors carry out a two stage examination of each candidate to confirm their suitability and competence to carry out First Aid at Work within the regulatory guidelines. The two parts of this assessment are practical demonstrations, and oral questions both designed to confirm the required skills and knowledge of the candidate.
The Certificate issued is valid for three years and prior to expiry a two-day Refresher course is required to enable the candidate to continue practicing First Aid at Work. These courses are a condensed version of the four-day course taking into consideration the previous learning and experience gained by the First Aider. This too is assessed in the same manner as the four day course and the successful candidates will have a new certificate awarded for a further three years.
